What we collect

KanTara does not collect personal information and has no accounts. When you first use the app, an anonymous session token is generated and kept in your browser's local storage so the app knows you're the same person across a refresh. We store: room codes, the display nicknames you choose, and the songs added to queues. In Voice Rooms, your microphone audio is transmitted live to other participants via WebRTC — it is never recorded or stored by KanTara. None of this data is linked to your real identity.

Display names

Nicknames (e.g. "Sunny Mango") are auto-assigned from a random pool or customized by you. They are visible to other users in the same room for the duration of that session. Do not use your real name if privacy is a concern.

Song data

Song titles and YouTube video IDs are cached in our database to speed up future searches across all rooms. This cache is global and anonymous — it is not associated with any specific user, session, or room.

Third-party services

How we share information with third parties

When you search for a song, your search query is sent to YouTube's servers via the YouTube Data API to retrieve matching video results — this is required for the app's core search functionality. Video playback uses the standard embedded YouTube player, which sets its own cookies in your browser (see Cookies below). Room, guest, and queue data (room codes, nicknames, and queued songs) is stored and processed by Supabase's servers to power our database, session tokens, and real-time sync features.

If you search for a GIF in a Voice Room chat, that query is sent to Klipy to return results; GIFs are then loaded from their content network.

We do not sell, rent, or share your information with any other third party for any purpose, and we do not use your information for advertising or marketing. Data shared with these services is subject to their respective privacy policies: Google's Privacy Policy (https://policies.google.com/privacy), Supabase's Privacy Policy (https://supabase.com/privacy), and Klipy's privacy policy (https://klipy.com).

When a direct connection between participants in a Voice Room isn't possible, audio may be relayed through Metered's TURN servers (Open Relay Project) as a fallback — this is transient, in-transit relay only, and audio is never recorded or stored by Metered or KanTara.

Cookies and local storage

We use your browser's local storage for things the app needs to function: your anonymous session token, your chosen nickname, and a few interface preferences (such as remembering a tab or toggle). There are no tracking cookies, analytics, or advertising identifiers set by KanTara itself. The embedded YouTube player does set its own cookies when a video loads, as part of how YouTube operates its player — these are set and controlled by Google, not KanTara, and are covered by Google's Privacy Policy.

Data retention

Karaoke queue rooms and their data are automatically deleted about 6 hours after the room is created. Voice rooms and their guest, chat, and queue data are automatically deleted within roughly 10 minutes of the room becoming empty or the host leaving. Cached song metadata (titles, thumbnails, video IDs) may be retained indefinitely to maintain search performance. Microphone audio from Voice Rooms is never stored. No personal data is retained.

Children's privacy

KanTara is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect any information from children under 13.
